OUR HISTORY

Carlsberg Britvic combines centuries of heritage with an endless thirst for innovation. Our extensive drinks portfolio - which spans soft drinks, cider and beer - makes us a multi-beverage powerhouse. And our deep knowledge of brewing, blending and bottling is evident in every sip.

1800s – An entrepreneurial British chemist, Mr H.D. Rawlings, starts creating homemade soft drinks in his shop in Chelmsford, Essex. 

1834 – John Marston establishes Marston’s Brewery at the Horninglow Brewery in Burton on Trent. 

1847 – J.C. Jacobsen establishes the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen. 

1868 – First imports of Carlsberg beer arrive in Britain. 

1898 – Marston’s Brewery relocates to the Albion Brewery in Burton on Trent, where the brewery has remained to this day. 

1930 – Ralph Chapman divised a way of bottling fruit juices to deliver an affordable source of vitamin C to people enduring the Great Depression.

1938 – James McPherson acquired what went on to be the British Vitamin Products Company.

1949 – Following the end of the War rationing, the British Vitamin Products Company becomes one of the first in England to sell popular fruit juices and soft drinks in small format glass bottles.

1971 – The British Vitamin Product Company formally changes its name to Britvic.

1973 – Brewing starts at the new Carlsberg brewery in Northampton. The same year, Carlsberg's iconic tagline 'Probably the best beer in the world' is created. 

1987 – Britvic secures the first 20-year bottling arrangement with PepsiCo in Great Britain.  

1995 – Britvic acquires Robinsons, the UK’s number one squash brand. 

1998 – J2O is launched, creating the adult soft drinks market with the perfect alchohol-free alternative to every social occasion.

2000 – The launch of Robinsons Fruit Shoot creates an exciting new category and is an instant success with families across the UK.

2005 – Britvic plc becomes a publicly traded company floating on the London Stock Exchange.

2020 – Carlsberg acquire The Marston's Brewing Company creating the Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company.

2025 – Carlsberg Britvic is born.
